Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise Steps Into a New Creative Chapter With Nayika Bhoomika, a Dance Drama that Debuts in Mumbai on January 9

06 January, 2026 Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: After establishing a strong theatrical presence with Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari, Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise begins the new year by deepening its engagement with Rabindranath Tagore’s literary universe. The production house’s upcoming stage presentation, Nayika Bhoomika, will premiere on January 9, 2026, at St. Andrew’s Auditorium, Mumbai, marking a deliberate shift from retelling a single mythic figure to exploring the inner lives of multiple women shaped by Tagore’s storytelling.

Conceived as a collection of four of Tagore’s short stories, Nayika Bhoomika examines womanhood through different emotional registers. Each narrative centres on a female protagonist navigating desire, duty, resistance, and self-realisation. Together, they form a textured portrait of women who do not seek permission to exist on their own terms. For Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise, the production reflects a larger creative intent to revisit classical literature with sensitivity rather than spectacle.

The cast features Indrani Mukerjea alongside Maninee De, Aakriti Sharma, Madhumita Chakraborty, Tony Chakraborty, and Subrat Panda. Subrat, who continues his association with IME, represents the company’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent within a rigorous artistic environment. Maninee De and Aakriti Sharma join the production as part of this evolving ensemble, adding depth and range to the storytelling.

Mukerjea, who is the founder and CEO of IME, leads the production both as producer and performer. Speaking about the direction the company is taking, she said, “With Nayika Bhoomika, we are not trying to outdo what came before. We are trying to listen more closely. Tagore wrote women who were quietly radical, and those voices feel especially relevant today. As a producer, I am interested in stories that leave room for reflection, not just applause.”

Directed by Tony Chakraborty and Madhumita Chakraborty, the play brings together music, movement, and narrative with restraint and intent. Their approach focuses on clarity of emotion rather than theatrical excess, allowing each story to unfold at its own pace. Madhumita’s creative framework anchors the emotional arc of the production, while Tony’s direction ensures cohesion across four distinct narratives.

Music for Nayika Bhoomika is composed by Shantanu Bhattacharya, whose score weaves classical influences with contemporary sensibilities, supporting the emotional transitions between stories without overpowering them.

Reflecting on the company’s trajectory, Mukerjea added, “IME was created to build a body of work that grows thoughtfully over time. Chitrangada showed us the appetite for meaningful theatre. Nayika Bhoomika is the next step in that journey. It allows us to explore complexity, collaboration, and craft in a more intimate way.”

With Nayika Bhoomika, Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise positions itself not as a seasonal producer, but as a long-term cultural platform committed to literature-driven theatre and female-centred narratives. The January premiere sets the tone for what the company envisions as a sustained creative year ahead.
